Our Partnership With the Base10 Advancement Initiative
Devotion to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
By: Mo Cowan
At Devoted Health, our mission is to dramatically improve the health and well-being of older Americans by caring for each and every person like they are family. To achieve that goal, we start with a foundation of love and trust between our members and everyone at Devoted Health. And every decision we make – from how we build our teams to the way we finance our work – is rooted in the values that will drive a more equitable, accessible health care system.
That’s why today, we are proud to announce that Devoted Health is partnering with Base10 Partners, the world’s largest Black-led venture capital (VC) firm, on their Advancement Initiative.
As part of our recent Series D funding round, we received investment from the Advancement Initiative, which is part of Base10’s VC Diversity Pledge and was launched with the mission of creating wealth for underrepresented minorities. Fifty percent of the fund’s carried interest is given directly to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to provide support to the universities’ endowments and create scholarships for underprivileged students in the name of its portfolio companies.
We know that diversity, equity, and inclusion can’t just be buzzwords – they have to be integrated into the core ethos of a company and the work that it’s doing to be tangibly achieved. Devoted Health shares Base10’s commitment to action through the Advancement Initiative, and this partnership will further advance our commitment to “walking the walk” when it comes to building a truly diverse, equitable, and inclusive company.
As part of our work together with Base10, Devoted Health will also be creating three full-time, paid internships specifically for HBCU students to nurture their growth and expose them to work at a high-growth, tech-forward health care company. Devoted’s first class of interns will spend between 12 and 14 weeks this summer working across our product and engineering teams on critical research and development projects.
For Devoted Health to deliver the highest-quality care, and to truly care for people like they are part of our own family, we need a workforce that looks like all of the members we serve. We need to include all perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences at our table, not only to build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce, but also the highest performing team. We are incredibly proud to be partnering with Base10 in service of that goal, and we look forward to sustaining this important work together as we continue to grow.
